Myotherapy Brisbane- What is Myotherapy?

Myotherapy, sometimes known as Musculoskeletal Therapy, is a branch of functional medicine that uses the latest CLINICALLY PROVEN manual therapy techniques and exercises designed to assess and treat the cause of pain – rather than endlessly treating the symptoms.

Myotherapy addresses a wide range of musculoskeletal issues, such as: chronic pain states (including frozen shoulder, bursitis, hip and shoulder impingement, etc), acute or chronic neck and lower back pain that can be associated with poor posture, muscle strain, whiplash, disc degeneration, or radiculopathy.

Our Myotherapists can also treat nerve related pain (Sciatica, Morton’s Neuroma, Carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy and much more), and aid in recovery of tendon and ligament injuries – RSI, ligament sprains, tendinitis (Achilles tendon, rotator cuff, tennis or golfer’s elbow), knee pain and so on.

Additionally our Myotherapy specialists can help you with postural improvement and exercise advice to minimise pain and tension from scoliosis, kyphosis, forward head posture, and other postural imbalances.

What is involved in a treatment?

Initial Consultation 60 Minute Session

Your first treatment will include a detailed interview of the health history, including previous injuries and chronic conditions, followed by a comprehensive assessment of the posture and movement, soft tissue structures (muscles, tendons and ligaments), joint mobility, and nervous system function. It’s best to wear loose clothing like shorts and t-shirt or active wear that you can move freely in.

After the diagnosis of the dysfunction, your therapist will perform treatment of the affected area, using a range of manual techniques, which may include joint mobilization, soft tissue manipulation, different types of stretching, dry needling, etc. Your myotherapist will also provide an individualised treatment plan including appropriate corrective exercise and self-care advice. Corrective exercises will be demonstrated either in the room or in our exercise demonstration area.

The therapist will follow up with you via email to check on how you feel after treatment and to check your progress. Your therapist may provide links to exercise videos held on our YouTube channel.

Consecutive Treatments

Follow up treatments may be required depending on your presenting condition, how long you have had the problem and what your goals are. Quite often, you will need more than one treatment, however some issues may be improved with just a single session. Follow up sessions may vary in length (60, 45, 30 minutes), depending on the treatment techniques required, complexity of the condition, and the number of issues that need to be addressed.

Techniques that may be used in a Myotherapy session:

Myofascial release (MFR)

Myofascial Cupping Techniques

Trigger Point Therapy

Taping and Bracing

Neuromuscular Techniques, like MET and PNF

Strain-counterstrain technique

Myofascial Dry Needling and Electro Dry Needling Therapy

I feel really fortunate to have come across Knead Massage. I see Roger Morelli, myotherapist for a chronic neurological pain condition in my neck. The treatment I’ve received from Roger has been of a extremely high quality and is very effective in treating pain and improving mobility. I’d advise anybody in chronic neurological pain to pay Roger a visit, even if like me you’ve seen many practitioners over the years, Roger was able to offer me a course of treatment both different and far more effective than anything I’d experienced in the decade prior. If I could offer more than 5 stars I would!

I’ve been having regular treatments at Knead with Liza Markova for years. She is a myotherapist by trade and is extremely knowledgeable. I consistently have back pain due to my work inhospitality as I have to stand and bend for long periods at a time. I had myotherapy treatment with Liza, which worked very well. She used a combination of massage, dry needling and joint mobilisation to loosen me up and I immediately felt a reduction of pain and an increase in movement. Liza has been able to help me in this way whenever I come to her with a specific issue. She is quite brilliant and I highly recommend her services!

I have been a client of Myotherapist and remedial massage therapist Roger Morelli at Knead massage Brisbane for nearly 7 years. I started getting treatments from Roger for headache and chronic neck tension. His intense myotherapy and remedial massage has provided me with lasting relief from many aches and pains and given me months without headaches many times. Roger combines expert deep tissue massage, low level laser and electro dry needling to take me out of pain and frequently shows me stretches and exercises to help the treatments last.

I started having treatment with Liza Markova for shoulder pain, which I was worried was bursitis given my issue with this before. Liza did an expert assessment of my shoulder, which showed developing rotator cuff syndrome. Using various myotherapy techniques and dry needling she did treatment of my shoulder and neck pain. I felt immediate improvement with 100% decrease in pain over a short period of time. I could not recommend Liza highly enough.

Myotherapy is an excellent choice for Sciatica pain.  A Myotherapist will conduct a thorough assessment of you and determine the cause of the sciatic nerve pain – disc bulge, stenosis, lumbar joint dysfunction, sacroiliac joint, piriformis or glute compression, hamstring or calf radiculopathy.  A myotherapy sciatic nerve pain treatment may involve:

  • Joint mobilisations
  • Neurodynamic techniques
  • Low level laser
  • Corrective exercises
  • Dry needling
  • Electro dry needling
  • Myofascial release
  • traction

Myotherapy techniques such as low level laser, electro needling, educational strategies and eccentric movements are effective ways to treat hip bursitis (trochanteric bursitis), shoulder bursitis (sub acromial bursitis), the bursal neuroma complex and bursitis of the knee.

Osteo arthritis symptoms can be lessened with expert myotherapy.   Low level laser can provide immediate relief to inflamed joints and treating the muscle either side of an inflamed joint will reduce pain significantly.  Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition and results from myotherapy are inconsistent for this condition.

Myotherapy is extremely effective for most neck pain states including, facet joint sprain/locking, whiplash associated disorder, wry neck, disc bulge, tension headaches, migraines and plain old neck and shoulder tension.  At knead myotherapy neck pain treatments include:

  • Complete assessment to determine the cause of your pain

  • Joint mobilisations (to improve the movement of the vertebrae)
  • Expert Deep Tissue Massage (to reduce muscle tension and improve movement)
  • Dry needling (to deactivate overactive muscles)
  • Complex stretching protocols (to make the effects of your treatment last a LONG time)

Myotherapy was invented in the early 1990’s at the Melbourne Institute of technology as a response to an overwhelming trend in other modalities treating 4-5 people at a time with the help of machines that had an effect of about 2 hours.  Myotherapy is about focused one on one hands on therapy with expert exercise solutions to RAPIDLY take pain away.  A myotherapists job is to effectively treat your pain in the fewest possible consultations (by showing you how to take your pain away yourself).

Myotherapy is an evidence based form of manual medicine that utilises hands on therapy.

Myotherapy is all about empowerMENT of clients – quickly reducing pain and giving them the tools to take away pain.  Myotherapists do this by establishing what you want and need and then performing a comprehensive assessment of movement, soft tissue structures (muscles and tendons/ligaments), joints, nerve pathways and biomechanics.

Myotherapists have a broad toolkit using techniques from most clinical modalities.  Outcomes are achieved through improving movement using joint mobilisations, myofascial release, cold laser, dry needling, TENS and electro therapies, kinesio-taping, and other manual therapy techniques as well the use of therapeutic exercise.

Not usually.  Some Myotherapists in remote areas are registerd to provide NDIS cover.

Both modalities are hands on targeted pain relief and movement improvement.  A Myotherapist has advanced training in anatomy, pathology, exercise rehabilitation, psychological factors of pain management and a wide range of clinical tools from most clinical modalities.  Outcomes are achieved through improving movement using advanced  joint mobilisations, Expert myofascial release, cold laser, dry needling, TENS and electro therapies, kinesio-taping, and other manual therapy techniques as well the use of therapeutic exercise.

There are many similarities between Myotherapy and Physiotherapy.  Both modalities are:

  • evidence based
  • incorporate corrective exercise
  • involve hands on techniques such as joint mobilisation, nerve glides and myofascial release
  • are excellent choices for sports injuries and musculoskeletal pain.

A physio degree is at least 4 years and a myotherapy degree is 3 years.  A physio is trained to deal with conditions such as heart attack rehabilitation, cancer rehab, and post-partum injuries.  Whereas a Myotherapist only deals with sports injuries and what a physiotherapist refers to as private practice clients.  Myotherapy is an excellent choice for sports injuries and people who require one on one high focus 45 minute sessions or longer.

Yes, as long as you have extras as part of your private health insurance. It is best to check with your fund as to how they allocate Myotherapy. Many funds have it with Remedial massage. However, some funds will make it part of the Physiotherapy pool. Myotherapy does not have its own code on Hicaps, which means that if you claim via hicaps the funds are coming from your Remedial Massage allocation. If Myotherapy is in a different allocation you will need to claim directly with your fund to make full use of your insurance. Contact your fund and ask them how Myotherapy is allocated.

Sometimes people confuse Myotherapy and massage and they are similar in some ways. Myotherapy is a more advanced form of bodywork utilising detailed assessment and treatment of soft tissue, joint mobility, nerve pathways, physical capacity and bio mechanics. Myotherapy will involve some massage but also other techniques not normally used by massage therapists. An easier way to think of a Myotherapy treatment is a cross between physio (with more hands on treatment than most physio) and remedial massage. In a Myotherapy treatment you will always receive hands on treatment.

There are two levels of Myotherapy qualficiations, Advanced Diploma and Bachelor of Myotherapy (Health Science). Advanced Diploma takes around 18 months to complete and the Bachelor takes 3 years. Both Roger and Liza hold a Bachelor.
