What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is caused by a compression or irritation of your sciatic nerve.  This compression results in shooting pain and tingling that spreads from the lower back down the buttock, thigh, calf and even the foot. Sciatic pain has significant variance.  Symptoms are often described as burning, dull, nervy, shooting or aching,

Tingling, numbness and weakness are common sciatica pain presentations. It’s important to consult with a clinician immediately if you experience these symptoms – as prolonged irritation can damage nerves and their function.

What are the symptoms of Sciatica?

  • Shooting/Radiating pain (felt in any or all of these areas – the thigh, calves and feet especially aggravated with movement – such as transitioning from sitting to standing).
  • Burning, tingling or other nervy sensation in the leg, originating from the low back or buttocks.
  • Numbness in the buttocks, thighs, calves or feet
  • Gluteal pain that is aggravated by sitting
  • Weakness, or difficulty controlling the leg or foot
  • Relentless calf pain – usually on the side or rear

What causes Sciatica?

(in order of most to least common)

  1. Lumbar Disc Bulges provoking the nerve roots (especially L4/5 and S/1).
  2. Lumber spinal stenosis (shrinking of the compartment of the spinal cord).
  3. Spondylolisthesis (an abnormally forward vertebra – common in gymnasts).
  4. Trauma to the leg, glutes or spine.
  5. Irritation or pinching of the sciatic nerve (a common muscle entrapment in the hips is called Piriformis syndrome).
  6. Joint Injury.
  7. sacroiliac dysfunction.

Compression at any point from the spine down can cause shooting leg pain known as Sciatica. Pressure from a herniated disc on the sciatic nerve or its nerve roots is the most common cause of sciatica.  Spinal compartment shrinking (stenosis), joint inflammation, nerve compression from bony growths or a locked vertebra in the low back are also common sciatic nerve irritants.

Muscle entrapment can cause Sciatica.

Piriformis syndrome is a type of Sciatica that occurs when the Sciatic nerve is compressed by a small muscle in the hip called the piriformis.  This is a common form of Sciatica and responds well to Sciatica pain treatments such as Myotherapy and Remedial Massage.

Who gets Sciatica?

People aged between 30 and 50 are most likely to suffer from sciatica.  People who sit a lot are statistically more likely to experience disc damage and sciatica pain.  High body mass is a risk factor.  People often Google “sciatica from driving”.

How do you diagnose Sciatica?

Your Myotherapist will perform a full assessment and utilise special tests after a thorough interview to establish the cause of your discomfort.

Sciatica is easy to diagnose, but sometimes the cause of the episode may need to be investigated with scans such as MRI or X-ray.

The majority of sciatica attacks resolve through conservative treatments such as Myotherapy.  It is essential that Sciatica symptoms that do not resolve with treatment are investigated with imaging to rule out life threatening conditions.
