What is Mindfulness? – A quality? A practice? An outcome?

Mindfulness is often described as the awareness that comes from ‘paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment non-judgmentally ‘ (Jon Kabat-Zinn) It is simple, but perhaps not easy at first!

Mindfulness is not a commodity that you “get” or un-get. We all already have this capacity as sentient humans although it is underdeveloped.

In short , mindfulness is three things:

1. A quality of being more present and aware
2. A practice, mindfulness meditation is what you do in order to develop the inner quality .
3. An outcome – Before long you‘ll notice outcome benefits of calm, clarity, more tuned into yourself and others, more engaged and centred, a more relaxed body and more wisdom in how to work with everyday challenges. Thanks to neuroplasticity, the brain and mind change!

Why mindful awareness is important to wellbeing

Often we move through life feeling we are at the whims of our emotions, perhaps too sensitive to other people’s (or our own) ideas and expectations. It is easy to feel lost. Over time, this sense of disconnect can lead to anxiety, repetitive anger, depression, inaction or a sense of stuckness.

“Live in the moment, notice what is happening, make choices in how you respond to your experience, rather than being driven by habitual reactions” Vidyamala Bruch

What is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction?

Created by Jon Kabat Zinn PhD and his colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre in 1979, the MBSR course integrates transformative Eastern practices with contemporary Western scientific knowledge of the brain and human body. Forty years after it has changed our understanding of stress and pain management , MBSR is taught globally in workplaces, offices and health settings.

This course is what kicked of the mindfulness revolution and the many offshoots.

SCIENCE is at the heart of this program

Since the first MBSR courses were offered in hospitals across the USA , it ended up being studied in those clinical settings. In pop culture when you hear about meditation and brain change, it is highly likely  that the basis of studies were MBSR courses. It has been tried and tested for over 35 years with an abundance of research .

Here is sampling of research of this program for a range of medical or psychological conditions:
