What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is an effective and efficient technique for the treatment of muscular pain and muscle spasms.  Dry Needling involves insertion of a fine filament needle into the muscle in the region of a “Trigger Point’.  A trigger point is a hyper irritable spot in a skeletal muscle. The spot is painful on compression and can give rise to characteristic referred pain, referred tenderness and reduced range of movement. Myofascial trigger points are commonly seen in both acute and chronic pain conditions like tension headaches, back pain, neck and shoulder pain.

The aim of Dry Needling is to achieve a local twitch response or a sensation like a muscle cramp, to relax the overactive muscles, deactivate the trigger point, reduce pain and restore normal length function to the involved muscle. The needle used is very thin and most clients do not even feel it penetrate the skin. The treatment is intended to be comfortable and painless.

Dry Needling approach is based on Western anatomical and neurophysiological principles. It should not to be confused with the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) technique of acupuncture. Acupuncture and Dry Needling may share some of the same points, however an Acupuncturist is qualified in the full system and principles of Acupuncture.

Our Clinical Myotherapist Liza Markova & Myotherapist Roger Morelli are qualified to provide expert Dry Needling and comply with all health guidelines in Dry Needling delivery.

Can I just have a Dry Needling Treatment? Is there an extra cost for Dry Needling?

At Knead Massage Brisbane, dry Needling is not a stand alone treatment - we combine it with Myotherapy or Remedial Massage. There is an extra cost if you have Dry Needling with a Remedial Therapist, but it is included in the cost of Myotherapy treatments.

Is Dry Needling Safe?

As with any bodywork there is a minor risk of injury and this is why we only allow therapists to administer Dry Needling if they have above industry standard qualifications. A clinician must have a high level understanding of anatomy to identify the appropriate points and avoid nervous tissue.

To have Dry Needling as part of your treatment you will need to provide written consent.

As the needles are very fine and not inserted very far into the tissue the treatment is safe as long as the proper guidelines are followed. Our Dry Needling Therapists have excellent anatomy knowledge.
