Since the age of 3 I have been singing, acting and dancing and from 2005 I have worked professionally as a dancer in the busy world of The Performing Arts, so I am no stranger to all the aches and pains in the life of a performer. As well as performing I have also worked as a therapist for the cast of a number of high end Qpac productions including Grease, Dirty Dancing and Anything Goes. I have also worked with a number of musicians from the Brisbane festival “Big Sound”.
I hold Fitness qualifications and have worked as a fitness Instructor since 2008 and have taught a verity of fitness classes including Spin, , Step, Pump, Body Conditioning and many more. I have also been lucky enough to work with the Irish Rugby Team of 2009 where they went on to win the six nations that year (I’d like to think I had a part to play!). So I feel I have excellent knowledge of the fitness world and the injuries that go with it.
From my experience of being a performer and fitness instructor I had noticed the many differences in the body shape of people from all walks of life, how they stand, how they walk and how easy it was to get injured by just having bad posture and not knowing how to hold yourself. As much as I loved performance I also wanted to know how to help more, how to treat a muscle problem and take the pain away. I wanted to make a positive change in people’s lives.
In 2010 I received my Diploma of Holistic Massage Therapy in Ireland and on arrival in Australia I continued my studies receiving my Diploma in 2016. I also hold an advanced certificate in Pregnancy and Infant Massage and in 2017 I completed modules 1 and 2 of Oncology Massage which is very close to my heart. I am currently studying Neuromeningeal Manipulation which will be completed in September 2018 and Dry Needling which will be completed in November 2018.
I believe that the body is impacted not only by how we use it and what we do every day but also by our mental and emotional state. My treatments are deep tissue with a combination of different techniques to mobilise, strengthen and stretch the body with a touch of healing for both body and mind. I like to treat all walks of life from the performer, the athlete, the office worker to the full time parent. I welcome all. I’m a big believer in looking after your body and mind. As they say “The show must go on” and for that to happen so must the body I say J
The opportunity to help improve someones' life is important to me. Pain can be debilitating and as a performer and being involved with helping people improve fitness I know what a difference it can make to a persons quality of life to feel good. I feel a strong desire to help people in their health goals.
As I start another day in no pain at all, I am reminded yet again of the benefits of remedial massage.
In my mid 40's I started to suffer crippling lower back spasms. I found relief by adding weekly yoga & Pilates, monthly shiatsu massages, and daily walks. These additions added general benefit to my health, however no discernible improvement to my 24/7 dull back pain. I still experienced 2 or 3 times a year excruciating and debilitating spasms that lay me in bed for days. Physiotherapy would get me on my feet but the ache remained.
In September 2015, a friend recommended remedial massage with "Irish Jo". Initially I wasn't keen, however my friend (who is notoriously tight with her money) offered to pay for the treatment! I wasn't going to allow that, but it made me reconsider. So I gave it a go.
I had never had a remedial massage before, and that first experience was not comfortable! But I was impressed with Jo. She listened to my history, and explained clearly what her treatment would entail, and she calmly guided me through the discomfort.
About 4 days after my 2nd treatment, I had this realisation that I was completely pain free. After nearly a decade of 24/7 back ache I was going through my day with no pain! I can't explain how marvellous that felt.
Since then I regularly see Jo. I feel safe in her hands. She has also prescribed some stretches and strengthening exercises. They are easy to fit into my day. My life now is so different. Since that first treatment I have not been bedridden with muscle spasms, and if I get an ache after sitting too long or a twitch in my lower back I do my exercises. I no longer have a sense of foreboding, thinking that the rest of my life will be ruled by pain. I am 55 years old and my body feels the best it has felt since my youth! I can't thank Jo enough, and I can highly recommend her remedial massages.
I had no doubts about going to knead massage.
I travel to Brisbane two times a year with my brother and we always manage to fit in at least one or two massages at Knead whilst we are in town.
I have seen a few different therapists at Knead and all have been effective, however Joanne has been able to relieve my acute stress in my lower back and legs, resulting in a great night’s sleep and comfort during the day. I specifically liked the way Jo knew exactly what to do to fix my problems.
I would recommend the Knead service to anyone, particularly Jo as she did a magnificent, thorough and effective job.
